Etter en lang politisk debatt ble det den 1. september 1983 endelig gitt grønt lys for snuing av Alexander L. Kielland, noe som i en lokal avis omtalt som «Verdens største bergingsoperasjon». Operasjonen startet den 4. september og varte i 11 dager frem til ettermiddagen den 15. september. Da lå Kielland på rett kjøl, det vi si 178 grader. Kommisjonen og andre parter gikk om bord i Kielland og inspiserte vraket. 6 omkomne ble funnet, noe som var langt færre enn antatt.
