Granskingskommisjonen for Alexander L. Kielland-ulykken ble nedsatt allerede dagen etter ulykken som inntraff 27. mars 1980. Kommisjonen startet sitt arbeid samme år. Dokumentene etter granskingen oppbevares i dag fysisk i Arkivverket. Alt sammen er skannet og også tilgjengelig i Digitalarkivet.

Etter at hovedrapporten om Alexander L. Kielland-ulykken kom ut, ble den sendt ut på høring til 102 etater, organisasjoner og institusjoner. 40 høringsuttalelser kom tilbake. Disse ble behandlet i Stortingsmelding året etter.
